Harley Earl's Design Shop

California State Standard: 11.8 Students analyze the economic boom and social transformation of post-World War II America.

  1. Students had to research the influences of automobile design in the 1950s. 

  2. Each student team had to create a car design using some of the techniques and influences of General Motors designer Harley Earl.

  3. Each design team had to use at least one pre-1959 aircraft, one pre-1959 automobile, and one ordinary household item from the 1950s.

  4. Students use Play-Doh to create a model of the exterior of their vehicle.   Clay models were often employed by  Earl's design team in the 1950s.
